Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan announced late Sunday that they will launch a four-day statewide tour this week to highlight what they call their historic education proposal. The tour begins Monday with stops in Mankato, Rochester and Cloquet.

A full list of stops of the tour are listed below.

From the high school where the governor taught in Mankato to Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead, Walz and Flanagan will travel across the state to speak with educators, students, and school administrators about the critical need to invest in education. Commissioners will also be traveling to highlight the Administration’s proposed education investments.

Gov.Walz in mid-February announced an education budget plan that called for increasing the general education formula by 3 percent in 2020 while driving additional funding for school readiness, special education and school safety. Learn more about the governor’s E-12 budget plan.

That was based on the initial budget forecast released in December. On Thursday, the Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released an updated forecast that revealed that $1.5 billion surplus reported in December has shrunk by $492 million. This leaves a $1.052 billion surplus for the next biennium. Learn more about the budget forecast, what it means and what’s next.

As a result of this forecast, Gov. Tim Walz is expected to present a revised budget to the Legislature in the next few weeks. In describing how he will revise his priorities, Walz said, “We must make investments that continue economic growth.”
