Leadership Academy Proposal Presented in Senate

By February 20, 2015 No Comments

The Senate E-12 Committee reviewed a bill last week that would provide professional development programs to school principals and other school leaders in school districts and charter schools. The bill establishes a Principals Leadership Academy at the University of Minnesota, instead of at the Minnesota State University Mankato.

SF524, sponsored by Sen. Greg Clausen (DFL-Apple Valley), was laid over for possible inclusion in the Senate E12 omnibus bill.

The bill would establish an annual application, review, and selection process. It appropriates an unspecified amount money for grants to offset participants’ costs.

The Minnesota Principals Academy was established in 2006 to provide intense professional development for school principals and has served over 300 principals across the state. Cohorts have been located in the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Grand Rapids.

Those interested in applying to the program may apply directly or be nominated by their superintendent or charter school board. Only those leading a public school district are eligible for legislative funding. More info at www.mnprincipals.umn.edu
