MDE Seeks New Licensing Director

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is seeking a new education director of personnel licensing. Richard Wassen, current director of licensing at MDE, is retiring.

This position provides leadership, management and oversight of the Division of Educator Licensing, which is responsible to: administer, process, and record licensure of educators; maintain and improve the educator state licensure system; serve as the Department’s resource person for the research, recommendation, and communication of teacher quality issues; research and monitor future school and educator workforce needs; and collaborate with agency customers and partners, including, but not limited to, higher education organizations and school districts. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or closely related area
  • Five years of professional level experience related to programs for teacher or school administrator education.
  • Experience working with technological and data management systems.
  • Experience in management, including responsibility for leading and directing staff, planning, and managing budgets.
  • Experience and advanced skill in policy development and analysis.
  • Experience in managing or supervising customer oriented services.
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, and building effective external partnerships and communications with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and to influence/negotiate positive outcomes with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability and skills to manage differing points of view and resolve conflict
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex priorities
