By January 13, 2013 No Comments

MREA Board Members and Superintendents attending the MSBA Leadership Conference have an excellent opportunity to connect with some of Governor Dayton’s top staff as the budget begins to be rolled out in an informal setting the Thursday evening of the MSBA Conference. Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans will host a Tax Reform Open House from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Department of Revenue, Skjegstad Room, 600 North Robert Street, St. Paul.

This is your time to easily add to the voice of rural Minnesota education in support of school funding and tax reform. The following are three messages you can convey.  It will make these even more powerful when you add the situation of your school district and the impacts on your children.  Please join Fred and Sam at this Open House.

  • MREA supports the recommendations of the Ed Finance Working Group and the $300 roll in of referendums.  All districts see an increase in funding and the gap between the lowest revenue districts and the top (5th%-95th % ) will be reduced by 8%.  (from 32%-24%). View the impact of the recommendations by district.
  • MREA supports the property tax reform proposed by the Ed Finance Working Group because it adjusts the tax burdens within each school district and compresses the wide spread in tax burdens among school districts.  The property tax funds raised stay with that school district. • MREA supports tax reform, specifically in the sales taxes, to increase state funding of education to afford the increased investment in Minnesota’s school children recommended by the Ed Finance Working Group.
